Local Marine Killed by Mine in Viet Nam

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Haire of Natchez were notified Wednesday their son, Lance Corporal Carson Earle Haire, 23, was killed in action in Viet Nam.  He died that day (Viet Nam time) after stepping on a mine.

The U.S. Marine Corps office in Shreveport notified the Haires of the death of the Natchitoches Parish youth, who was a member of a helicopter squadron.  He had enlisted in the Marines after attending Northwestern State College where he had been a member of the ROTC.

Survivors in addition to the parents are a sister, Mrs. Minnie Faye Harvey of Shreveport; and four brothers, Ralph Haire, Jr. and Robert Haire of Natchitoches, En/3 Edgar L. Haire aboard a U.S. Navy submarine U.S.S. Tirante stationed at Key West, Fla., and Sp/5 Jerrold W. Haire serving with the Army in Viet Nam.

Cpl. Haire, a graduate of Natchitoches High School participated in track, managed the football team and was active in the Future Farmers of America at NHS.  He also competed for national honors in parliamentary law procedures under the sponsorship of the NHS Future Business Leaders of America Club.

His body will be brought to Natchitoches for military rites later this month.  Blanchard Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements and interment in Memory Lawn.

Mrs. Jerrold Haire and daughter, Carolyn, who have been residing in Germany, plan to fly here to join the family.

As I have visited the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC on a number of occasions, I have always taken the opportunity to find Carson’s name and to think about him and to pray for his family.  I remember riding the school bus with Carson for years.  I remember being on the track team with him.  It seemed that he could run forever and never get tired.  I remember one time when I was not kind to Carson.  I am sorry for that.

I have thought of Carson often.  I have thought of how he faced something, which few of us are called upon to face:  physical fear and the imminent possibility of a violent death.  I don’t know how a person walks forward knowing that their next step may be their last, but Carson and over 50,000 young men and women like him did.  That qualifies Carson and his comrades as members of “the greatest generation,” so heralded recently.
